United Football League

Every decade or so, someone with a lot of money decides there's room for another professional football league.

Remember the World Football League? The USFL? The XFL?

All short-lived, all crushed by the NFL.

Next up ... the United Football League?

This past week brought word, first in a New York Times column, of preliminary plans to launch an eight-team league, possibly as soon as 2008.

The United Football League would play in the fall, going up against the NFL as well as college football.

Lotsa luck with that.

The idea — the brainstorm of Wall Street maverick Bill Hambrecht — is for the league to have teams in non-NFL cities such as Los Angeles, Las Vegas, San Antonio and Mexico City.
