Kip Wells after giving up a first inning run, settled down and retired 9 straight. It looked like he was going to pitch a nice game for St Louis, then came the fifth inning. Wells walked three of the first five batters in the fifth, then permitted a three-run double to Carlos Lee that chased him from the game and removed any doubt about the outcome.
Rookie Matt Albers pitched very well for Houston. He went 7 1/3 innings giving up just 3 hits.
WP Albers 1-1
LP Wells 1-6
The Redbirds pitching staff gave up 14 hits on 13 runs.
