DENVER -- The Cardinals confirmed on Wednesday morning that catcher Yadier Molina has sustained a fractured left wrist and will be out approximately four to six weeks. Molina will be placed on the disabled list and the club will purchase the contract of catcher Brian Esposito from Triple-A Memphis to take his place on the active roster.
Molina, 24, was struck by a foul tip in the third inning of Tuesday night's game against Colorado. He remained in the game into the fourth, but when it became obvious that he was in intense pain, pitcher Braden Looper called the training staff out to the mound and Molina was removed.
Molina has a non-displaced fracture in his wrist. The joint will be placed in a splint and immobilized. The injury occurred in a similar area to one he suffered in 2005, when he was struck on his left hand by a pitch while he was batting.
