Cardinals blanked 7-0

After scoring 9 runs in their last game on Wednesday, the Cardinals went into San Diego hoping to build on that outburst and try and defeat the Padres. However, that was not to be. Jake Peavy pitched 7 strong innings of baseball as he held the Redbirds to just 3 hits while getting 10 strike outs! It didn't help the matter that Kip Wells struggled from the mound. He managed to pitch 6 innings but he gave up 7 hits and 4 runs. Two of those 7 hits were home runs. He did manage to get 8 strike outs while losing his 6th straight game.

Is there an end in site? There doesn't appear to be. The "meat" of the Cardinal lineup is struggling to bat over .200 and we are well into the season. That's not good! The clean up hitter Jim Edmonds is batting .202, he is followed by Scott Rolen .204, and Ryan Ludwick is batting .200. Even the number 8 hitter shortstop David Eckstein is batting .213! Add to the fact that the pitching staff is not as strong as it had been in the past, you can see why the Redbirds are 9 games out of first place and just 1/2 game from being in last place in the Central Division of the National League.

WP Peavy 5-1 and increased his ERA to 1.52
LP Wells 1-7 ERA 6.51
