Braden Looper used his arm and his bat to propel the Redbirds to a 5-0 defeat of the Padres in San Diego on Saturday night.
Looper pitched 7 innings of 3 hit ball while getting 7 strike outs. He also lowered his ERA to 2.29 for the year. Add to this the fact that with one out in the third, Looper doubled down the right-field line. Adam Kennedy singled to center, and Chris Duncan walked to load the bases. Albert Pujols hit a fly ball deep to left field, but the ball squirted out of the left fielders glove. That scored the lead run, and the bases remained loaded. I thought Pujols had hit a grand slam, but instead it was only 1-0. That being said that is all Looper needed to get the win.
